I’m writing to you today to share one of my greatest loves – fashion! I’m not talking about fresh-off-the-runway fashion. I’m not talking about New York Fashion Week, or the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show (although I do love it!), or what’s currently trending in the latest issue of Vogue. I’m talking about classic, refined, sophisticated, vintage-inspired fashion.
Honestly, I miss the hats and headpieces, the petticoats, the pearls, the heels and stockings….the feminine, classy styles of yester-year. The iconic styles of Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis, combined with the modern designer styles like those worn by Kerry Washington’s character Olivia Pope on the ABC series Scandal, is my ideal combination…on a single mom budget, of course!
Something as simple as a black merino wool sweater with a pearl necklace and my hair lightly teased and swept up into a bun, with some pink blush and winged eyeliner applied only to my upper lids, is the perfect look to mix a little modern with a little vintage.
When it comes to special occasions, I love to lean a lot heavier on the vintage. In August 2017, I found a red and black dress on Thred Up with a full and flowy knee-length skirt. I saw it and immediately thought “that would be the perfect Christmas dress!” At the time I hadn’t even thought of putting a petticoat underneath. I planned to simply pair it with some knee-high black boots. But when it came time for Christmas Eve dinner prep, I was pulling the crock-pot out of the hall closet and spotted the petticoat from my 30th birthday two-and-a-half years earlier stashed in a basket.
I snatched that puppy out of the basket and went immediately to my bedroom to put it on underneath my dress. It turned out to be the perfect length, and after I swapped out the boots for a pair of black heels and slipped on a pair of black tights, I had a vintage-inspired look that mimicked Mrs. Claus!
I decided to make it a tradition to throw a little (or a lot of) vintage into my holiday outfit each year. This year I found a gorgeous green dress on Unique Vintage. While the price of $88 is actually pretty reasonable for a dress, I wondered if I might find something green and swingy on Thred Up, so I got to shopping. It wasn’t long before I found the perfect hunter green dress with a swing-style skirt from Zara, for $30.00. It was in someone else’s cart, so I clicked on the “auto-buy if available” option. The next morning, the other person’s 24-hour purchase window was up, the dress was removed from their cart, and the auto-purchase option made it all mine!
I had also ordered a dress for New Year’s Eve, plus a dress and a blazer for work, so this dress was added to my bundle and the order shipped for free the next week. Since Thred Up gives specific sizing details, I was pretty confident that it would fit, but I had to wait until it arrived on November 20th to try it on before ordering the accessories to go with it.
Once it came in and I had a successful fitting, I went immediately to Amazon and ordered a black petticoat and a black pill box hat. The hat I really wanted wasn’t Prime eligible and might not arrive before Christmas, so I had to go with a different one, that was a full-coverage hat rather than a smaller headpiece-style hat, in order to have it for Christmas. My head is small so hats always fit a little loose on me, and the pill box hat is definitely no exception. It’s a little bigger than I would like, but it has a strap to help hold it into place.
Here is a slideshow of the final Christmas Eve look:
Putting this outfit together was so much fun!! The next dress-up event will be New Year’s Eve, for which I will do another fashion post featuring that evening’s outfit. But for a little sneak preview, I purchased this dress for the St Jude’s New Year’s Eve fundraiser event from ThredUp for $25–yes, really!
I hope this finds you well this holiday season, and I can’t wait to write to you again!
